Holy Cow, Mab is looking good in the first panel there.

XD I feel sorry for anyone trying to get romantically involved with Mab.  Seems to me she's either going to refuse it and feign ignorance unless she initiates it.
Looks spiffy BTW.

Seriously though, this got a chuckle out of me. Mab is so silly it's cute sometimes.

And it kicks off to a nicely funny start.  :giggle

And I agree, the shading and lighting and effecting was nice in the first panel. Not that Mabby's face in the second panel didn't make me snicker. :B

Mab, Queen of tangential logic (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_232.php) since 1999.

Though the main panel is, I think, fairly impressive from an artistic standpoint, I like the expression in the bottom panel.

The colours on the first panel look exceptional.  Very vibrant.  I love how her hair looks.

We should all know though that her perfect date would be Merlitz anyway.  That's the only person she seems to have ever shown any romantic interest in that I can recall.  Or is this arc perfect date as in, how the date would go, not who it would be with?

I think the idea of the comic is that it's supposed to be like one of those dating simulation games, not who the characters would date and how.

I would so go for option 3.
Because, you know, it's about time someone asked that question straight out loud.

Although, it's not hard to make a guess to its answer.

I wouldn't say all the Fae are ''bonkers'', cause of some of the things I've seen of Mab, she seems to have some (if not completely misdirected) scene in that hug happy head of hers.

Point, but when I think of Albanion, he only seems to be completely bonkers whenever Nutmeg gets upset. Other than that he seems like hes perfectly ''sensible'' as far as Fae go. I know what you're all gonna be thinking when you read this and please don't say it.

"this time around."

I guess Mab is playing a part. Despite being, about houndreds of years old, when she meets little Dan she looks about 8. I guess everytime she "resets" and becomes young again, Mab thinks up a new personality and romantic intrest. :3

The Fae race (http://www.missmab.com/Demo/fae.php) are known to treat life not unlike a role in a play.  The fact that there is more to Mab than just tackle-hugs and tangential thinking should be fairly evident for even casual readers since about two-thirds of the way through Chapter 22 particularly the ending comic #847 (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_847.php).

I have it on good intelligence that Mab is much, much older than "a few hundred years."
Not sure what else I can say about that.

Those date sims are amusing...

I can't wait to see the progression here.  Mab is just perfect as the start of this.

I think the Fae are perfectly sane, they just act insane to keep other races from sticking their noses into their business. :) Yes, they are silly and wacky, but they are capable of long term planning and stick with a role in life once they start it so they have to have intelligence and be capable of rational thought, rather than the crazyness they are known for. :)

Okay Kipiru I take that back. It is mostly spelled right. He only spelled three words incorrectly. I don't care what he says, but Nekoboy is one of those people that don't follow advice given to them, much like my brother. And a chronic allergy to the spell check button is just silly, in a good way.

I was indisposed during the first wave, so anything I say now would just be piling on, but by the looks of things, he hasn't learned a damned thing, and totally deserves it.

There's a certain amount of leeway given when people don't realise they're talking to mods. Heck, there's a certain amount of leeway given to ensure that when one mod responds, the person they're slapping down actually sees the response before being banned.

Having said that, there are also limits. I strongly recommend that nobody attempt to use this as licence to poke us; shoving your hand in a hornet's nest is probably smarter.

Yeah, and my favorite pastime is acting completely stupid and moronic... no really it is. :)
Although it could be the fact that I have been listing to the 8 same songs over and over, which has, in effect, scrambled my brain even more that necessary... ever try spinning your arms in a circle? Its pretty fun.

Hey, I do the same thing all the time. We're in the same crazy-boat.

On the subject of the latest comic, Mab looks gorgeous. Amber, your artwork is wonderful. I'm looking forward to this arc more than ever. Out of curiosity, is she going to go through all of the characters on the cast page, or just the primary characters?

Also, the punchline was hilarious. It reminded me of Family Guy's "Petarded" episode, in which Peter consulted one of those barnyard animals during an IQ test.

I am only going to say this once, but I think several members of this board need to serious step off in regards to piling on the responses to Nekoboy.  Unless he is blatently breaking the rules, then keep the snarky comments to yourself.

As for the banning system, we actually try to give someone several chances before we officially lay down the beat down.  Unless someone is doing something so offensive (like spamming porn to everyones PM box or a complete rule break) that it warrents us skipping straight to perma-ban...most everyone gets a series of warnings followed by some temp bans.  The logic being if someone actually banned for more than a week or a month and then continues to troll off the same behavior, then its not really a loss there.

Nekoboy ,  Do you want a .... Dating Sim game (http://www.khakain.com/dunkinbean/yaminabe.html)
or a Furry Dating service (http://forum.cutecast.org/furdate/index.cgi?tid=1)?  I am not sure which is Creepier...  And Amber is too busy to draw for a gaming company....but if anyone knows of a gaming company looking for artist... Direct them to Amber..  She love your forever, but we will see the end of the comic.

I'm going by memory, Nekoboy, but I think some people have actually discussed turning DMFA into a dating sims game or making a video game adaptation in the past. However, the last discussion kind of went sour. I think the thread's still in the Abandoned Mine, but I could be wrong.

Caswin still has his "DMFA: The Game" thread in the Tower of Art, too.

OK, I'm getting kind of sorry I brought this up, it's getting too serious( though Nekoboy sure has issues) for a simple funny remark. So drop it off with the Nekoboy, if the Man thinks he is fine, then who are we to judge.

Title: Re: 10/02/08 [Perfect Date #1] - The cow goes muuuuuooooooo

I don't think anything is fine. But I do think that having seven people gang up on someone who has already shown they have a martyr complex does not exactly show a lot of maturity and intelligence on the part of the majority.   Especially since this happened to be one of the few times he wasn't arguing with the mods and was actually posting somewhat on topic.  What's next? Gonna follow him around and response with snarky comments on each thread he makes whether or not you had an interest in the conversation beforehand?  Sheesh people. I don't expect you all to hold hands and welcome someone who has given you grief, but I would expect you to at least be moderately courteous...or heaven forbid...ignore his posts when they are harmless but annoying you.

I am not going to pretend to hide politeness. I know many of you expect Nekoboy to and up back on the ban list. And he might, gosh knows if he falls back into his habit of arguing with authority and breakings rules.  But if that is the case, then let him do it on his own. You guys just agitating him only makes you look like bullies in the process and complicates things.  Give him his space and he will either improve as a member or hang himself on his own rope.

As for the whole flash game. It isn't gonna happen. I am not even going to pretend like there is a chance.  In the past several people have come along talking about doing some sort of DMFA game related thing. Sometimes its an RPG, sometimes its a fighting game, sometimes its a dating sim.  And it always happens that people get worked up and excited...but it always falls flat on the actual work-progress.  So I decided that I am not going to waste my time or the forums time.  If I ever want to do a game, I will look into it myself. But I have little desire to do so at this time.  End of story.

And by that logic I am going to say nothing more about Nekoboy and let him do his own thing, and also not start talking about a DMFA related game, as Amber jut said, If hasn't happened in the past it wont happen now unless he wants it to and she doesn't. Maybe we should all just shut up...

Anyone can make a flash, Nekoboy.

The problem is, to make it good, one needs a lot of images. Those images have to come from Amber. That takes time away from updating the strip; something Amber has been fighting to limit for years, now. Heck, her current update schedule is an attempt to catch up on things that she's been trying to finish for, she says, too long.

There is also a lot of work involved in making the plot work well. After all, it's not like we'd all want something that didn't have the quirky humour we all have come to enjoy. So you need either someone who can make more humour of the same sort, or more of Amber's time, again.

This is not to say it won't happen... but there's an awful lot of work involved in making a game, even a quick flash game. Much of that work would have to come from Amber, much from whoever else was involved in it. Nobody has, as yet, managed to successfully come up with the time.

And, as Amber says, she's given up hoping that they will. Sooner or later someone with money will come along, and make a game. Given how many games are made that fail utterly, I can't see it happening soon...

You're welcome to do your side of it, though. Just don't expect Amber to cough up lots of time to match it...

That or you get a room of trained monkeys who can match Amber's work line for line in her stead.

That's the best you're gonna get, since most of the good American animators are either long-since retired or dead. Anyone left is now working out of South Korea.

I assume that you are talking about Macromedia Flash.  I believe that that is part of the Adobe CS3 package.  I seemed to have missed an interesting thread.

However, before you can make a decent Flash animation, you have to script it the way you would any other animation or computer game.  You don't really need decent images for the scripting portion.  There are a number of books on the subject.

A DMFA based flash game of any kind sounds very interesting to play and I for one would play it, if just to see what its like, that is assuming anyone could pull it off. as for anyone who partakes in the endeavor, I wish you the best of luck. And i would pay you if it would help, but I just spent most of my money on a sword. I like swords, just like Dan, but my ''collection'' so to say is no where near as extensive as his probably is. Meh, it just my ''hobby''

Nope. Macromedia, and, once they were bought out, Adobe, have been fairly careful about not allowing people to write programs to create flash files.

So the only one available is the canonical one, now known as Adobe Flash; or if you get some larger package that comes with Flash as a plugin, eg CS3, as mentioned previously.

Any other option would be illegal, and there are rules about requesting illegal things on this forum.

No games, huh? Really now, if you work on a sim, you could just do the artwork, and get someone else to work with menus and the such. Make it one of those where the only animation is changing a pose and facial expression to denote emotion. If that doesn't make sense, I apologize.

It's not that she cant do the artwork, its that she doesn't have the time. I know you aren't one to pay attention but that's just ridiculous. By the way, Pheonix-IV, your avatar disturbs me greatly.

A great many people dramatically underestimate how much time is involved in creating a computer game.  There is also the issue that the only comics that translate well to computer games are those involving combat or racing games.

Here is a list of what would be practical

Puzzle games such as Sudoku, Concentration, and sliding tiles (The one where one space is blank and you have to move the other tiles to create an image.)  that would use images of characters in the game.  Since these would use existing art work, they wouldn't be much of a demand on Amber's time.  Although I haven't checked, there may be some open-source computer programs out there where all you would have to do would be to add the images.  Other possibilities would be Hangman and games similar to "Wheel of Fortune".

A "Which  Character are You?" game where the user would answer a set of questions and the computer program would then state which character the person most closely resembled in terms of personality.  (I'm not sure I would want to meet the person whose personality resembles that of Kria or Wildy.)

A word find game where you would have to find words and names related to the strip in a block of letters.

Connect the dot pictures

Coloring book type pages

Mazes (help Alexsis find her hammer)

Games with a plot such as the following:  Mab has decided to make brownies for everybody at the Lost Lake Inn.  Help Dan and Abel intercept all of the brownies before they reach the patrons of the Lost Lake Inn.

Educational games with Fa'lina as the host.  (She does run a school)

Mix and match type games where you could take the head of one character, the body of a second, and the legs of a third.

Now, when I say practical, I don't mean quick or easy.  However, you might be able to find open-source code into which you could drop images.  I also realize that this isn't what many of the readers had in mind.

Having a role-playing game using computers or rule sets such as GURPS or D20 (an open-source Dungeons and Dragons) would be a very large amount of work.  There are online comics where there are much larger groups of people that have been in the processing of generating a GURPS version for years.

*****

By the way, there are a great many avatars here that disturb me greatly.  However, I rely on the morals of the moderators to exclude those that cross the line.
