Heyas!

I'm an undergrad currently majoring in animation (which doesn't mean I can draw well, by the way  :B) Anyway, I have developed quite a few different styles of drawing... comments appreciated on which one you think is the better one.  :hug

Heheh, I think I know the game you speak of, though I've not yet gotten to try it. Gotta love that canvas-style artwork.

Very good, to say the least.

It is indeed a very interesting style. But possibly a time consuming one as well. You should keep experimenting with different styles as well.

Truly impressive work- this style has a lot of potential! I can't wait to see more of your work to see just how far this style expands- maybe some of your own characters?

The look reminds me, a little, of some of the full color work Ian McCoonville (Mac Hall, Three Panel Soul) does, but looser. There's a lot of energy.

Also, awesome. Especially the hair, fabric, and fur: there's texture to the material even though it's stylized. The facial expression is 100% Mab, too.

The wrist looks a little thick, tho. Dunno if that's part of the art style or not.

In fact it actually takes me less time to do something like this compared to my usual way, because it's such a sketchy style, so I'm less inclined to correct all the little mistakes that I make.  :mowtongue

Put up a comparison of some of my different styles that I've been experimenting with. Just wondering: Which one do you like best? And why?

Kaoru (NSFW) (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/rhyfe2002/sketches_kaoru.jpg)
Just a sketch I was tempted to make after looking for pose references. ... Really!

Akaru  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/rhyfe2002/akaru_tinting-1.jpg)
The oldest character that I made (about 10 years ago... note the spines leftover from the Sonic fandom, heh). Ironic that he's the youngest...  >:3

Reyna (NSFW) (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/rhyfe2002/reyna_wallpaper.jpg)
The only picture out of the four which I spent over 2 days on. (Don't regret it at all though.. hee  :mowcookie)

Reyna (Chibi)  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/rhyfe2002/reyna_evatix-1.jpg)
A style inspired by various other artists that I watch on DeviantArt.

These are incredible  :bow Your style rocks! The coloring is impressive with the way it actually feels like the characters have fur on them. The only one I'm displeased with is the chibi ones, but that's because I don't like chibis in general  :mowwink. you asked whish we like most- I think I'll go with Reyna(NSFW version)- it's a really well finished piece of art. Again- awesome work, looking foreward to more.

do you have a Deviant Art account or something?

The two NSFW pieces are very nice. Beautiful art and colouring. I might give a slight edge to Kaoru. Sexier pose. Darker lines. I love the hair.

Akaru is cute but not that special. Not enough contrast to make that sort of texturing work. The chibi didn't work for me, either. Parts of her are too chibi, others are not chibi enough, and the end result is a little too unbalanced to be cute. I like the colouring job, though. When aiming for cute/chibi, the style you used for Mab works much better.

Thanks everyone for the comments, I really appreciate them ^^

Anyway, here's yet another thing I did on a whim (simply by looking at someone's avatar pic).

Akaru does the Caramelldansen!  :boogie .. or at least, tries to.

This was done totally from scratch (i.e. I didn't use another animation as a base) , since I wanted to keep his original proportions.

Scratch build, eh? Not bad. Not bad at all. How many frames is there? six, ten?

Ten frames. The original had 15, for comparison's sake.

Out of curiosity, do you/did you ever play Neopets?
Your coloring and lighting on your animations are really great. that's something I can never handle properly in Flash - coloring!

Colour me impressed with how Zina turned out.  If you've still got a slot going, I'd be interested in one myself, actually.

Thanks to the comic I now have a plethora of characters so I'm a little torn each time I consider getting a commission or a request, but see what you can do with my avatar if you would be so kind.

I still think Zina has one of the best full-body references for him:
http://www.jpmorris.force9.co.uk/stuff/jakob/jakob_by_zinacat.jpg
...though watch the ears if you're colouring them, they should be the colour of his fur, not his hair.

I'd very much appreciate a sketch of any of my comic characters (Comic archive (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/archive.php?comic=today)).

I wouldn't mind trying a trade or collab, either.

Hi, you're the 4th on the list =P Please wait until I've cleared at least two of the others before requesting again, thanks >:3

In the meantime, I'd prefer it if you actually narrowed down your choice of at most one or two characters for me to choose from.  :mowdizzy

if you're feeling up to it, i wouldn't mind seeing how you'd do Milnea from The Foxfire Chronicles (http://www.ariannia.com)

i can provide full body shots if need be. =]

Waaaaaaaait, are you guys even looking?  :erk I said I would only take THREE outstanding requests at a time  :<

Do please look at the first post before commenting... thanks  8)

apologies, at least i had the common sense to ask for one >:3, as fruitless as that may be.. i'll be a good boy and wait my turn.  :U

Are you nuts?  I've seen stuff on the level of the Mao picture in print.

This (http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k216/tapewolf/con/ac09/sketches/?action=view&current=Keaton-Keaton-small.png) is what I call a sketch.  What you're doing now and writing off as a 'sketch' is something many people would be happy to pay for  :B

I wasn't too sure about some details, I hope you don't mind me exercising a bit of my creative control  >:3

Not at all!  I would much rather an artist enjoy it when they do stuff for me.  I love the picture.  Particularly the expression used. :D

I have to agree with Tape that, for a sketch, this is pretty high quality.  Most folks would call a quick penciling of the item in question a sketch.  This is borderline commission stuff around here. :D

I can haz request arts? o:

Edit For Information, Because I'm Forgetful Like That

a) Either of me is fine, what with the whole Janus, two avatars/faces deal, et cetera. Just pick one of the two (ferret or red panda) and go with it.

b) Most Efficient Colourscheme Image (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1815224/)

c) As for clothing, well, left (ferret) tends towards either the Janus Bond Tuxedo (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_461.php) or Casual Clothes (http://zinacat.deviantart.com/art/Janus-Commission-37177418), while the right (red panda) goes with either what he's wearing in the Casual Clothes link, or these clothes (http://mewzii.deviantart.com/art/Sympathy-for-the-Devil-58402833).

d) If I missed out on the request, oh well. I'll have better luck next time.

It's interesting (if slightly unrelated to the art in question) that a picture of someone's avatar is usually them standing, looking heroic.

Probably something subtle and psychological, I mean. You hardly ever see anyone's avatar looking like they just stepped out of the bath (not like that, you perverts) and being all messed up. If someone is, their hair is perfect, for example, and their towel is spotless and white.

I dunno about you, but the towels I have in my house include a couple of nice big white ones, but also a random collection of all sorts of other colours, shapes, and sizes...

Not that I'm criticising, Rhyfe - anything but. Just thinking in passing...

For my part, it's because Pegasus drew my avatar, which probably influenced Rhyfe.  Great artist, but drawing someone with everyday musculature and not in a dramatic pose would probably kill him  :P

I have no idea what you're talking about... XD If it's Tapewolf's request... I thought he WAS kind of heroic-y o.O; Well, he's all shiny and clean and stuff, right? :D I was mostly messing around and practicing action poses and crazy angles (both of which I suck at).. well now you know why I'm giving away free sketchies... it's good practice  >:3

Very heroic indeed. (http://www.project-future.org/simeon.php?strip=7)

In all honesty, he's a lot more like Dr. Who.... just wandering around and walking into trouble far more than is statistically likely.
The avatar I have, which I'm assuming influenced you, is very atypical - in fact I was hesitant to use it because having a superhero-like avatar seemed vain.  I just happen to like the picture a lot.  It was a conbadge and thus done a bit quickly - if there had been more time I'd have requested a more normal pose.  I'll likely switch avatar over to Amber's version when that commission is completed.

I still have to say that I'm very impressed with the quality of work your putting out as "sketches".  I'm starting to think I should through my name in for this.  After seeing what Kipiru did with a simple description I've been tempted to see what other artists would come up with.  But, I'm willing to wait until more have had their chance.

I like the "painted" look.  Very reminiscent of Japanese Calligraphy (or whatever that form of painting is called that uses the same style, like what was used in Okami (http://files.nintendic.com/ps2/okami/16408-okami.jpg)).

Edit: Err....on closer look, most of your stuff is in that style  :sweatdrop.  Shows how observant I am.

*snerk* Ah, I see.

Witt, then.

Rather than the usual frontal views, Witt, being obnoxious at the best of times, is probably best viewed from behind. With one hand on a beer stein, and the other raised, giving the finger.

He's a short, stubby, hefty hedgehog; about 4'8" tall, and some 4'6" across the shoulders; all muscle. Wears a helmet with a spike on it, like this (http://www.johnnyg.westhost.com/hgi174-NCO-spike-os-s.JPG), from this page (http://www.johnnyg.westhost.com/helmets-imp-german.html), a leather jacket, with holes in the back for his spines, and fingerless leather gloves.

Usually covers his spines in laxatives and capsiacin, if that gives you some idea of how unpleasant a person he is. ;-]

Need more details?

Actual picture references of the character would be the best, but if not, just a few other things: 1) I assume he's not the Sonic-type (only a dozen or so spines)? 2) I'm not quite sure how the helmet is going to fit on his head, what with all the spines, either..

Name: Baseel (pronounced Bah Seel) (AKA Basilisk) Wolkshammer

Race: Demon

Gender: Male

Species: Demon Canine, Shepherd

Physical Description:  Tall, and thin, yet well muscled, one would find him to be the poster child of the demon race, at least in appearance.  He Looks to be in his early 20's by being standards.

Across his back, starting at the top of his head, and running all the way down his back is a near jet black fur across his front is a silver tinged with a hint of brown, running across his face, down his throat and down his body, and ending in pure silver extremities.  He has full black patches around his eyes, giving him an almost raccoon mask coloring. His muzzle is also mostly black, with brown around the corners of his mouth, and a silver ring right as his snout begins to broaden.  A black diamond shape sits between his eyes and goes from the bridge of his nose to the crown of his head.

His cephalic hair (human like, head hair) is a reddish blond, and is worn in tied into cable-like clusters, and held together with silver rings.  (basically think stylized for personal effect)

Bas sports a rather impressive pair of horns that sprout just behind his eyes, they curve up and around, facing slightly forward at the tips. (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/basilisk/basilisk4.png reference by whitefox)

His wings match his fur patterns quite nicely, dark at the top, moving to brown about the shoulders, then silver at center mass down. though the bottom wings are rimmed in black as well.  His wingspan is 16 feet at maximum, and given his musculature, he seems capable of flight.

For clothing he usually wears a dark, forest green robe, with black trim, along with similarly patterned pants.

if you want me to wait... or perhaps need more information, let me know... i've got a few rough sketches of my own... but nothing in extreme detail... i also base his facial features off my own dog, so if you'd like a picture there... i'll go find a good one...

Hee, I couldn't resist  >:3

I can -hear- the Bond Theme in my -mind- just looking at that. That and it also gives me a slightly 'film noir' feeling - kind of the gritty feel of the novels as opposed to the movies. Hm, Janus Bond goes gritty detective novel... ideas, ideas, ideas. Rambling aside, I give it the Emil Seal Of Approval! (IIIIIIII LIKE IT!)

Poor Chance though.. it really seems like I'm whoring her out to be quite the piece of eye candy XD Granted it's all these great artists' fault!  >:3 (Ok ok.. I don't blame you.. but I'm grateful nonetheless!!) :boogie:

And Thank you SO MUCH!  :hug your art is awesome! I'll keep watching!  :3

One or two of these have somewhat large and over-round heads compared to their bodies.  The Abel pic in particular... well, unfortunately the term "melonhead" just won't go away  :B
Is this a stylistic thing or a glitch?

Yeah, I tend to draw only females/babies, so I tend to draw everyone's heads, including those that shouldn't be,  disproportionately large.  There's something wrong with the way I draw hair, too; it often appears thinner than it should be, which also contributes to the the whole melon-head thingy. I've been trying pretty hard to change it, but.. I guess old habits are hard to kick =;(

In any case, the Abel drawing was a 30 minute sketch at most, so I wasn't really paying attention to anatomical details :P (I didn't feel good about taking requests and then doing something else instead  :rolleyes)

She doesn't seem like the type to dress in revealing clothes, so.. yeah.

No worries about the wings, they still look great. I also like how the picture is blue instead of black and white.  :hug You're awesome, rhyfe.   :januscat

Probably something subtle and psychological, I mean. You hardly ever see anyone's avatar looking like they just stepped out of the bath (not like that, you perverts) and being all messed up. If someone is, their hair is perfect, for example, and their towel is spotless and white.

Huh? I can't be the only one who thinks that would be awesome. Fresh out of the bath... wearing nothing but a towel... damp hair matted... little droplets streaming off muscles...

Rawr! >:]

QuoteI dunno about you, but the towels I have in my house include a couple of nice big white ones, but also a random collection of all sorts of other colours, shapes, and sizes...

Actually, I don't think I own any white towels that weren't... um... inadvertently liberated from some hotel. :animesweat

Honestly? I rather like the way you do hair. The thinness gives it a certain lightness that makes it look more flowing and hairlike.

I bought a hairstyle magazine (Sophisticate's Hairstyle Magazine) about 5 months ago that I use for reference. Five bucks, hundreds of pictures. Very handy. Even if I look utterly ghey when I read it in public.

truth be told, you know what you need to change, and you strive to change it, that's half the proverbial battle won right there, there's far too many artists who flail under the "It's my style!" excuse it's kinda sad...

that said, i do like your style the rough sketchyness overall give a little more soul to things than most folks are ordinarily used to, it's refreshing to see.  :3

I kinda figured you might be having trouble. :-/

... Only problem is, I don't have any babes to draw. The only female char I have is Tim, and she's a Gryphon B - ie, not anthro. She also tends to wear a flowing cloak, and to have a slightly harried look on her face from looking after Rover... so any picture of her would only be complete with him in there somewhere. And, if you weren't aware, he's a Gryphon C, one of the big suckers.

Something with the two of them is something I'd be cautious about requesting a sketch of, if only because he's big enough to make it a lot of work - you wouldn't get the sense of scale unless there was background to show it,  I think.

In short - if you don't mind, I'd kinda like the Witt pic. And I'm happy to wait, and/or change it around, if that makes it easier; I just figured you'd enjoy a challenge...

And does radiate awesome. I like the shading in the spines. I also like the had which flips off the viewer. Many drawings of such hands would have the middle finger drawn strait up which would be impossible in real life for most people without some sort of brace due to tendons. In this picture the finger appears slightly bent which much more realistic.   :januscat

The only way you can flip someone off and not strain the tendons is to bring the index finger up with the middle and simply curl it down.  The more tucked in you try and make the index finger, the more you're going to strain the tendon.

Akaru tries to impersonate a Cubi. Not like it's that hard to do. (Wings + clan symbol, at least as far as I know)

Is Akaru supposed to be a child, or to bring up childish associations? I got that with the picture on the front page, and this one, with almost a trace of baby fat, and running in a partly sunny meadow............. (I ask because the headwings are supposed to be a sign of adulthood among 'cubi, and the mixed imagery confused me a little.)

Most people would call him a baby, and he certainly acts like one for the most part. The only difference is that 1) he doesn't seem to age, and 2) has powers that border on the god-like (Fortunately, he is blissfully ignorant of that fact).

Note that he didn't actually turn into an incubus; Most likely, he merely thought that having a clan symbol and headwings were cute, and shapeshifted himself a couple of them.    :giggle

Two more you say...I may have to get in on this then.  Though I kind of want to see another character of mine done up, but seeing as I have nothing other than ideas in my head about them, I guess I'm stuck with Dekari for now.

If you want to do this, take your pick of which one of the three forms to draw him in.  Got a reference pic of one form done by Kipiru over at this link (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,4967.msg286872.html#msg286872) and general description of everything else over at these (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,5673.msg289752.html#msg289752) two (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,5673.msg289990.html#msg289990)

:boogie Hey, I'll go with that.  Funny thing though, that is spot-friggin-on (well, minus the tie) to how I picture him in my mind...or at least how he is when he is out being "casual".

Edit: Hell, you even got the proper visual personality down without me even saying anything.....are you in my mind? :P

Well, unless you imagined your character to be some sort of superhero (which was what I was thinking of when trying to draw his so-called civilian form) then probably not. :D

Okay, I decided that I didn't really like the tie anyway, so I took it out.

Heh. I don't mind either way. >:] I just find it amusing that the last couple of artists to draw me have put me in a tank top despite my never having dressed the character that way in ref pics. Do y'all know something I don't? Admittedly, it does look pretty sexeh. Maybe I'm just out of touch with current fashion trends. :animesweat

I suppose it's just more natural for people to draw more well-built bodies with clothing that shows it off. :D A tighter T-shirt would work, I suppose, but it'd be hell to draw the folds on those. :animesweat
Title: Animation!

I'm guessing some of you would've probably seen it on DA or FA already, but hey:

Akaru no Hikari (http://vimeo.com/8528372) (P.S. might wanna turn the volume down)

A 1:40 short animation about my character that I made for a class. It also explains why I vanished off the face of the Earth for half a year. XD

Anyway, I do hope you enjoy it. *goes back to his dungeon again*

*comes out again*

Oh, in case you got your hopes up, unfortunately I won't be offering free sketches anytime soon, due to work and school stuff. (I was planning to do one during Xmas season, but I was busy trying to finish up my animation) Sorry, guys :(

*goes back in again*

Very impressive.  What animation system to do use to create it?

I agree with WhiteFox.

And like Tapewolf, I want to know what software you used to create it.

Heck, I want to know your entire process behind creating, as I am curious about these things.

I said 'system' just in case it wasn't software.  Could be digital video.  Traditionally it would have be C-format or celluloid, but it's rather too clean for that.

The animated frames were individually drawn on paper and inked on paper, which were then scanned into the computer and colored using Photoshop. They were then exported out into Adobe Premiere (video editing program), and then Adobe After Effects (basically a Photoshop for video) then back into Adobe Premiere for syncing with music (which was made in Garageband).

Unfortunately I didn't know how to use (nor did I have access to) animation-specific software like Toonboom, which would have helped me a lot. =/

Well, my old art thread got locked for inactivity ;_; Oh well, it's not like I post in there all that frequently  >:3

Anyway, I always liked the bebe versions of the DMFA characters that sometimes appear, like the ones in the wallpapers, or those that appear in flashbacks. I always hoped that Abel would get the same treatment but since he hasn't yet, I thought I would try it in my own style  :3

Too bad it doesn't look quite like him ^^;

My biggest gripe was his hair: Would using another style make him look radically different? In the end I just went for a shorter version of his current hairstyle... I don't really think it came out right, though.  :rolleyes

You could have just asked one of us to unlock it for you. XD  Did you want me to unlock it and merge this in?

Incidentally, I have to agree, the hair is the only thing stopping this from looking almost exactly like him.  I otherwise feel that the likeness is spot on.  Really though, at a young age, that haircut seems much more appropriate anyway.  As always, your stuff is sickeningly cute.  I just got diabetes from looking at it. XD

Able has two larger bangs on either side of his head, and a smaller one in the middle. The larger bangs change the outline of his face, which might be why it doesn't look like him.

Baby Able in AS#2 (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_04.php) only has the one central tuft, though. Of course, he doesn't really look like grown up able either, does he?

Young Able in AS#10 (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_12.php) has two bangs, and the rest tied back in a pony tail. Again, doesn't really quite look like adult Abel.

In summary:
A) Trimming the central tuft and extending the bangs a bit might make him look more like adult Able.
B) Bebe Able doesn't look like adult Abel anyway, and it's canon.

On another note; dang, that is one adorable little kitten. The figure seems more like a young child then a baby. His pose makes him look like a squrimy little rugrat. :3 I can't help but wonder why you didn't add his wings, tho.

Argh! If only I knew there was a canonized bebe Abel; I'd have just used that as my reference. Also, I had initially tried drawing the wings, but they ended up looking like crap, so I just took them off. :<

This time I based his look off the one Amber did for Abel's Story. Initially it was a sketch like the last one, but somehow along that way I started coloring it.. and this happened  :U The pose has its problems, but overall came out better than I expected. :3

I actually planned a third one, but I think two in a row is overkill already.  :B

Sketches of my own character. I've been working on my final year project for so long that I haven't drawn in a while >.<;

(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/rhyfe2002/th_akaru_sketch.jpg) (http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/rhyfe2002/?action=view&current=akaru_sketch.jpg)

I'm also working on a Maya rig (a skeleton that allows a 3d character to move, for the uninitiated  >:3) for the Krystal model from Star Fox Adventures. You can see an animation test of the current build here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLe8lIql1Io) if you're interested. I'm not a very good rigger, so if anyone wants to help out, please feel free to PM me or something, I'd greatly appreciate it X3
