Title: 02/03/09 [PF #54] - Well, at least he's taking it well.
Post by: Jairus on March 02, 2009, 03:34:24 AM
Might as well start this. If you want me to change it to match Friday's date, I can do so.

Seriously, how hard is it to say "You're an android now?" Either than that... well, the thread header kind of sums up my feelings regarding Dorcan's reaction. And those double panels on his chest remind me of... crud. I can't remember the name of the anime. I wanna say "Guyver," but I'm not sure. Anyway, the panels opening on his chest reminds me of that. Yeah, deep, I know. And... yeah, he seems to have become a lot more buff since he died. For some reason, I'm vaguely reminded of this (http://www.project-future.org/strips/guest/IRegretNotheeeng.jpg) little (http://www.project-future.org/strips/guest/IRegretNotheeeng2.jpg) adventure. Except a lot more PG. I can imagine Daryil saying something like "You know, if he's going to be immortal, you might as well make him buff!"

Oh, and glad that you're feeling better, Bro.

If you've been in SAIA for 450 years and have no clue what "android" means because Beings were still using wooden carts to travel when you went in, it can be a bit tricky...

As for the chest, it was supposed to be a single panel, but Ren wanted two.  IIRC it was a reference to some anime, but since there's hundreds of those and I only know the name of 3-4 of them, I can't help you there.
Ironically, although it doesn't match the original text, it does almost match the early concept art for Dorcan as drawn by Cameron (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k216/tapewolf/dmfa/Dorcan_cameron_smaller.png).

I was wondering whether anyone would pick that up as a glitch in the artwork.  I never did work out what I'd say if that happened.

Bizarrely, Gabriel's Thoughts posted almost exactly the same joke after the original story was published.  He didn't illustrate it though.

Yep, I wanted his chest to open up that way to resemble the "Guyver". :> ..Except some "Mega Smasher" jokes in the future.. >:]

Pretty much.  I'm still dithering as to whether it's an actual working studio, or just where they store things and repair them.

**EDIT**
I've updated Niall's profile slightly.

You know, I thought the exact same Animé when I saw that panel, the exact same scene. It's funnier because I barely make any effort to watch anything Animé (outside of Studio Ghibli) and certainly not something obscure like that, but I just happened to watch the pilot of that cartoon in a friends house back when I went to school long before I even knew what Animé was. (He lived near a specialty video rental store you see).

Anyway, nice strip Tape. It's nice not having another character going through a panic trip through this thing. Joshua was the king of panic and we don't need another contender. ;)

That's not to say that Dorcan is panic-free, but yes, he's a lot more collected about it than Joshua, who had an almost permanent D-face.

I must not Lollipop.
Lollipop is the mind-sucker.
Lollipop is the little stick with the knob on the top that brings total satisfaction.
I will face my lollipop. I will let it pass into me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will drop the stick into the bin.
Where the lollipop has gone, there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

... until the next one.

It's Nietzsche, actually.  The original quote (*) is "That which does not kill us makes us stronger".
I must confess that I got the idea after seeing Conan the Barbarian which starts with the quote in the opening titles.

*Well, the common rendition.  The original was presumably in German.

"I find your lack of pants... disturbing."

As for Dorcan, the design for his appearance was originally cribbed from this strip:  http://missmab.com/Demo/Cubi03.php   ...as I have no doubt mentioned before.

...so I guess the idea of him not being big on shirts is subconsciously taken from that page.  I don't think it gives too much away to say that Dorcan is actually rather happy with his new look, once the initial shock is worn off.

I don't think I've actually heard what Dork-boy was based on, so that's kinda neat to see that.

And really, I don't think I'd complain too much if I woke up and found I'd become quite buff since I went to sleep. Besides which, he doesn't have that grotesque amount of muscle that body-builders have: it seems to be a more natural and healthier type of, well, buffness. Of course, he's already died and he's in an unaging machine body, so I don't see what health has to do with the underlying mechanics of his new body...

From the description it sounds like you're thinking along the right lines.  Dorcan is not supposed to be grotesquely overbuilt, but he is muscular enough that people can dismiss him as a jock.
...these are more-or-less the same directions I gave to Pegasus.  IMHO he went very slightly overboard there, but if you look at his galleries on DA or FA, you'll note that he tends to go heavy on the musculature anyway.

As to be expected. This technology is still fairly new, with only three subjects so far. Jakob's not going to have the data and research and experience and technology to build something of that level or scale quite yet, but give him a few more decades and he will be at able to have those upgrades ready and available. Dork-boy and co. should be glad they're more or less alive at this point. And I think that they are.

Besides, a Cubi without its clan marking is an interesting idea. Heheheh.

You know, the topics of clothing and pants and wearing or not wearing thereof seem to pop up a lot in this comic's discussion.

Just as a heads-up, we're probably looking at a Saturday or Sunday update, I'm afraid.  Part of that is knock-on from Ren's sickness last week.  The bad news is that he's apparently got Morrowind to run.  Heaven help us all...

It looks unlikely I'll be able to do an update tonight.  I think we're most likely looking at a strip on Monday.  Either that or we just skip this week entirely to give us some breathing space again.  I'm still thinking it through.

Yeah, I got a similar message. Ren told me he was making contact from the university, which since I think he's constrained to a desktop makes it a little harder for him to email stuff. But at least we know he's alive, which is a really good thing.

From the updated rant:

Okay, so the situation is this.  Ren is having major internet issues, and is currently
only able to get online sporadically from University.  Hence, the strip is completed and
ready to send but he is having big problems actually doing this (and it may also impact
his ability to get the reference for the next strip).

So at the end of the day, I'm not sure whether we're going to have an update Friday or
not - it's a bit early to say but right now I'm not too hopeful, unless things rapidly
improve.  I'll do something on Friday, but it might have to be a Questions from the Readers
or something.

I have made an assumption (echoing their mythological namesakes) that with their looks, youth and lifespans, 'Cubi are somewhat more casual, or to put it another way, 'loose'.
In short, Daryil has something of a wandering eye, but his long-term relationship is with Simeon.

Likewise, nothing says one has to love one person only and exclusively. It's just a matter of finding the right people.

Obviously, a Cubi has much longer to go looking...
