Title: The Bestiary
Post by: Brunhidden on November 24, 2008, 03:10:25 PM
Previously, on the suggestion of llearch, i had started a helpful guide to the more prominent/dangerous forum goers to assist the newbies who might want to know just what kind of knee deep manure they have gotten themselves into.

it failed, for reasons..... yes, reasons.

however now i have concocted a new way to present the bestiary as to aid those who have blindly stumbled here to meet their untimely doom.

i will start, not with a FAQ but with questions you should ask but probably wont

Q- What is the point of this?
A- did you not just read what i introed? its a 'get to know' for some of the people you will inevitably meet, perhaps it will keep you from pissing some of them off

Q- Why isn't everyone here?
A- partially because i have just started, partially because i am only covering prominent or dangerous entries, partially because i don't really know everyone,

Q- Why are there no pictures?
A- there's a forum photo gallery, if they wanted their picture up it would be there

Q- Can I change my entries?
A- no, however you can petition for a change by either posting on the thread or a PM

Q- Can I suggest someone else to enter?
A- yes, yes you can. but not yourself. however you need to have a compelling argument that the person you suggest is either prominent or dangerous

now, onto the format.

as you can see the entries are placed alphabetically, all entries will be updated on the first post, and all entries will contain the following information

name- obvious
faction- see below
danger level- how afraid you should be of this person
location- the sections of the forum they are most frequently found at
bio- some flavor text telling you about them

faction, this may take a little explaining, but in the long run will make it easier for me to describe someone to you. a faction can be thought of like a game where you have diffrent sides, however the only 'sides' here are divine, mortal, magical, dark one, and troll. none of these factions are currently at war, although some once were.

Divine- much like Buddhism or Shinto the land of the internets is full of gods and goddesses. no, they are not omnipotent, typically each has their own little domain they rule over, though they sometimes wander to be seen elsewhere. divine net entities deserve respect, largely because they often do have the power to smite.

Mortal- just your average internet entity, they lack the prestige or power of influence of other factions, however they should not be discounted. individual mortals can have compelling arguments driven by herculean intellect, show incredible determination, or there's the fact they outnumber all other factions by about five to one.

Magical- something about this net entity has a lot of power behind it. those of the magical faction typically draw a lot of attention, have forceful personalities, a gimmick of some sort, and a respectable presence of post. the ranks of the magical faction are fleshed out with angels, demons, djinni, dragons, and all kinds of fantastic miscellaneous, as such they can often turn on each other and are less danger to other factions then you would think.

Dark one- more commonly known as lurkers, dark ones keep their agendas secret and their opinions infrequent. not much else is known of this faction other then its widely suspected they have a conspiracy going.

Troll- mostly those who are unpleasant to be around, unpopular, or actively seek to cause trouble. the troll faction was once incredibly powerful but was decimated by the divine legions long ago, thus those you see are either tolerated due to good behavior or kept as a pet or court jester. the trolls however await the time when their king, according to prophecy, will appear and lead them to conquer the internet and rule supreme. but that's laughable

Now this is a project that I really hope takes off.   Though I have to say some folks might not be pleased with the realities of how they are viewed here.  Hopefully all of our skins are thick enough to take it.

Question though:  How often will you likely be updating this?  Often enough to notice if someone has a change of 'faction' or 'danger level'?  I mean it's one thing to call a troll a troll, but say the troll gets straightened out and that's just left up there hanging over them, will it stay that way as a reminder of a less than proud point in their life?

This looks very amusing.

What sort of criteria will you be using to determine who gets on the list?

Second question, can we suggest ourselves for the list  :mwaha

yes llearch, considering i haven t even put in a single entry yet. although as you can see your suggestion of zina as the first one was taken

You can sticky it :P

It'll be a forumite project like Random Hugs and ATAPF

EDIT:...In fact, this whole thing reminds me of the Pantheon (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Pantheon/TropePantheons) side-project on TVTropes

EDIT EDIT: Y'know, if I can find some spare time, I see if I can tackle making some profile suggestions for this, or at the very least compile a list of notable forumites.

Not to step on any toes, but I think that all the Admins are likely to show up sooner or later (and most likely sooner) on this list..... And if they're writing their own entries, then they might not turn out to be the huge warning sign for new members that the intended purpose (or at least state purpose) of this project.

Of course, that might be more fun in the long run, all things considered, but still.

It is, but I didn't want to point it out.  Beast is the noun, but usually whenever it's in an adjectival form, it's best- (bestiary, bestial, but for some reason beastly).

Still, I'd rather be in a Bestiary than an obituaryworsted wool.

I would think, that where this is meant to act as a warning/survival guide to new comers, it would be wise to advise them of people who are known to be argumentative and at times, downright mean, in their discussions.  While the term Troll carries with it some nasty connotations and could be possibly replaced with another term, the idea remains.  Though it does seem odd that important would be an issue if the project was willing to call someone a troll.

Ehn, I don't know about that. I was under the assumption that this list was meant to be silly. Like the way people always joke about who they should "watch out for" when greeting new members. Writing that so and so's a jerk, watch out for them, seems a tad mean-spirited, and I can only see it ending with people getting angry.

Fair enough, though I think this list doesn't outright call them a jerk (or fully even imply it)  and I don't feel that your example of calling so and so a jerk is quite on the mark, unless it were to come to pass.  Further to that, I don't think Brun would do that.  Even if he did, this list is stickied and on your forum (by yours, read all mods) so if you think something is unfair, you guys have the ability to mod it, unfettered.

Saying so and so is argumentative and can be down-right mean is basically implying that someone can be a jerk. And having a public warning that someone within the community is a jerk isn't very friendly, imo. We're basically ostracizing current members, and I can certainly see people getting upset by that.

I have an idea.

It's a joke post anyway, so far as most of the current entries go, so why don't we say anyone who doesn't want to be in it can opt out, just like for the random hug thread.  We can even take it a step further and encourage Brun to let someone know when they have been included if it's not certain that they are already aware of their entry.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if someone decided I was important enough to be included, but I have a sense of humor, and, who kows, I may learn something about myself through seeing how others percieve me.

Aside, I think it would be nice if there were a post made when updates happen, because it's diffucult to tell what, if anything, has changed from day to day without going through searching for new stuff.

Of course, all that would be more work for Brun that he may well not be interested in doing, but that's why it's just a suggestion from a lowly worm, not fit to eat the very earth beneath your feet, to sample the soil your mighty feet hath tread, who looketh up and holds in awe the very saliva of your disdainful expectoration, whose moisture he is not worthy to have cast upon him, oh wise and powerful moderator type people.  :bow :dotdotdot :paranoid ;)

furthermore, anyone who is not happy with their entry could request it changed, as was explained in the first post. i had not intended to offend anyone, but it seems that's impossible

OLD cartoon show whos protagonist had a patch/logo that looked exactly like that symbol.

From what I understand now, it was a parody of a show called Danger Man, but at the time I just thought it was just a parody of spy movies in general.

I suppose Dangermouse (circa. 1980) is old but Danger Man was from 1963 or so!  'The Prisoner' is implied to follow on from it, and that's something most people have heard of.

Personally, I was just having fun offering Darkmoon an avatar from one of the furriest TV shows of the 80s and then pretending not to know what it was.

(Wait.  David Jason played Dangermouse?  That show just got ten times more awesome!)

I just chose one at random that wasn't a multipart video or less than a minute.  Glad it was a meaningful one.

Danger Mouse owned. Way cooler than the shared-verse show Count Duckula.

Dangermouse was alright.

Unfortunately, Darkmoon, I was granted the official title in the annals of geekdom by David Cook and Skip Williams at the 1993 Gencon.  I was entered into the registrar with others for a successful 72 hour campaign run... continuous, nonstop gaming.

But, I think it looks nicer on you.

So who is adding to this, because there are a number of entries that need to be made, lest I be the first to file...

I changed my bio, mostly because A) I don't post in the art section anymore, B) some of the other bits of info seemed to fit my comic character and not really me, so much. So I decided to re-write it to something more fitting.
And then I felt silly for writing my own bio, and didn't know what to say.
So that's what happened.

My entry stings because it is true :< ...Actually, I thought it was pretty funny. As long as this remains satirical, I don't think anyone's feelings will be hurt. Otherwise, my sentiments are with the mods.

As for the sentries, I ATE THEM ALL.

I was planning on just posting the lyrics to "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast, and just replacing "Gaston" with "Zina".
But then I realized I don't own a pair of boots, let alone go stomping around in them. Nor do I have a swell cleft in my or and an incredibly thick neck.
I will never be half the man Gaston is. :C

Quote from: Reese Tora on December 08, 2008, 04:53:30 AMAside, I think it would be nice if there were a post made when updates happen, because it's diffucult to tell what, if anything, has changed from day to day without going through searching for new stuff.

didn't spot it until you mentioned Zina's new entry. c:

you need to come to the attention of a moderator or the OP, who can edit the bestiary, and then they will write something based on the way you act (EG: I made a suggestion followed by some ultra-ham kow-towing and you can see the result)

If you ask to be added, I wouldn't expect to get the most flattering of descriptions. (but, you never know :P )

Ah if only I had this on a few forums I started out in. Truly a device of help and knowledge this is to be used as and praise to those who use its tomes of hidden knwoledge wisely.
