Title: 3/1/07- YEEEG!
Post by: Boog on March 01, 2007, 08:58:24 PM
You made me start laughing when I was supposed to be doing homework, thus attracting parental attention. That was a very mean thing you did, Amber. :U

Well, Dan seems to be having a good couple of weeks for awesome expressions. So, any guesses as to what's up with the spiders?

HEE!  Dan can't help himself!

Now of course we gotta ask whether next update will continue with this mess or switch over to Jyrras Crush Number 2:  Ride 'em Cowgirl

Title: Re: 3/1/07- YEEEG!

For HaZxMaT, the spider is saying "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. He hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now how abhorred in my imagination it is!"

Oh, I SO needed this laugh, Amber. I was in such a poor mood before. XD You are my hero.

I assume that all the spiders in the basement have all somehow been completely bloated on random Shakespearean quotes, or are all just amazingly eloquent in general. Dang. What the heck's in that stuff they've been eating? I wish that the spiders in my house would do that, it would make me think twice about squishing them. I can already see myself holding up a big tarantula to my Mom and going "Can we keep it? It says The Taming of the Shrew quotes!"

EDIT to the Spider-Quotes: Oh yeah, and what MaskedRetriever said.

How come all the spiders in the basement quote Shakespeare? (Or possibly Shakesbear, given that they're in Furrae.)

YES! Yes, yes, yes, yesss...! It's a confirmation! The spiders are in da house, literally!

Thank you, Amber. I think you've made us all very happy with this. Also, note Dan's face in the third panel. Kind of reminds me of myself...

Point the first.  Dan's expression in panel 3 is the best.  Ever.

Seriously, Amber.  Hang it up, you'll never top that one.  Or, if you can top that one, you might want to check with customs before sending something so addictive across the border.

Point the second.  It looks like that's yet another spider.  Is there one for each Shakespeare play (and a separate one for the sonnets)?  It might pay off to send the Titus Andronicus one back to Abel's Story.

Point the third.  Can we get the Henry IV Part I spider?  I want some Prince Hal action.

Oh, and point the fourth: what if these spiders are like the bookworms in The Eyre Affair?  If Amber reads Fforde, I have a whole new respect for her.

(Of course, Fforde's writing does often leave much to be desired.)

The Arachspearians are due to get a Demonology 101 article soon, so I'll let a few tidbits slip.

Firstly, despite their use of words, they aren't sentient.  For some reason their language sounds exactly like various Shakespeare works.  Maybe it was due to some magic tinkering, maybe its just coincidence, who's to say.  However they are still only about as bright as a goldfish.

The different colours seem to reflect which type of work they tend to recite. And in actuality they can only recite a certain amount of lines at most.  So sometimes you end up with one who quotes a really obscure verse. (For comic reasons, I chose particularly well-known verses)

The only other unique thing about them is their bites cause completly random reactions. Sometimes it does nothing, sometimes it causes ilness, sometimes it causes one to learn ice-magic or for their nose to turn magenta.  Some like to play a game similar to russian roulette with a pet Arachspearian.  Not recommended though.

Thats about all I'll say for now. Demonology 101 will likely cover any major details.

Absolutely brilliant. I can't say anything else about it, really.

Now, does this mean that if well-prepared, one could actually attempt to use Arachspearians to "learn" or "earn" certain unusual traits? That does sound like a new method that some colleges might try out.

I can see the course descriptions already! "the Arachspearian Bite Programme; smile and hope for the best!"

I wouldn't say well-prepared so much as desparate or foolish.  10-1 the odds are you are going to have a negative reaction (even insta-death) before you get anything remotely good.          And odds are the only good thing you'd get is the ability to see in the dark.  There isn't any real way one can "prepare" themselves.

Really the only saving feature is Arachspearians are pretty docile and usually need to be provoked before they will bite.

It could've just been by taking the general idea that most people find spiders = ICKY and tormenting. So he might've not known, he probably just followed the fact that NOBODY would be happy to find a big, Shakespeare-quoting spider hanging over your head.

Also, fascinating info on the Arachspearians.  Quite a creative critter, if not beautifully humorous.  If a spider could recite poetry, I daresay I probably wouldn't mind one that size hanging around.   :P

Buuuuut I just can't seem to make up my mind.  It is indeed the greatest one Dan has ever had, but... there is some real competition with Mab in panel 3 of comic #409. :mwaha

... I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your own grinning? quite chapfallen? Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to' this favour she must come; make her laugh at that.

How I do love Shakespeare, I do hope I got the rest of that right... my memory is not what it used to be.

I will say this about Amber, that is bloody freaking awesome... the "language" is interpreted as Shakespeare, all I can say is amazing.

I blame the fact that there are several different pronunciations that use the same alphabet.  Changeing the phonics of the letters, but leaving the letters intact, with a bit of repositioning.

At first I thought the Arachspearians were just normal Arachnids who, for completely comedic purposes, were extremely big and happened to quote Shakespeare. I didn't know that they were a unique species. Now that I know I actually like them. A lot. I have to ask, Amber - what do the colors mean, exactly? You mentioned the colors went along with the particular kind of poetry the critter liked to quote.

(thinks) Ooh! Here's one I think no-one suggested!

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean,
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes,
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents' strife.

Eeeee,is awesomes. I Giggled X3

Thanks for clearing the spiders up there Amber, i was thinking they were smert for a while!

However, i too can see a lot of silly people trying to use them as a 'get-quick way of learning magic/getting some various power'.  Only have to look outside at the various silly people out there to understand why!

Hehe.. they're still scary x_x

Dans expression is a classic though..!  Is like.. rawr, i'm a Lion. X3

There are actually 16 different ways to spell his name (yours is not one of them).  I recall that a public library demanded that an artist change a mosaic she made for the library with the name spelt `Shakespere.'  Interestingly, this was the spelling that the bard used when signing his name.  Doesn't explain the bit about ``(Albert) Eistein'' and ``(Vincent) Van Gough,'' though.

I'm told the bard himself signed his name in multiple different ways....

Yup. There were definitely more than 16 variants, as well, though the general consensus is that they were all pronounced the same way. For linguistics and accent buffs like myself, historical spelling and rhymes give us a fascinating insight into the times...  :kittycool

Well, I'm citing the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica:

The name Shakespeare is extremely widespread, and is spelt in an astonishing variety of ways. That of John Shakespeare occurs 166 times in the Council Book of the Stratford corporation, and appears to take 16 different forms. The verdict, not altogether unanimous, of competent palaeographers is to the effect that Shakespeare himself, in the extant examples of his signature, always wrote " Shakspere."

In addition, there are only 16 variants that appear more than once (http://shakespeareauthorship.com/name1.html).

I do apologize for the diversion.

Back a little closer to the topic, are there Pope or Butler spiders?  And will Arachspearians ever quote from the bad quartos?

``To be, or not to be, I there's the point, To Die, to sleepe, is that all? I all: No, to sleepe, to dreame, I mary there it goes,''

Since everybody's suggesting monologues, I'll suggest this one:

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;
Our bruised arms hung up for monuments;
Our stern alarums chang'd to merry meetings,
Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.

(mainly because I hate people quoting the first line without the second)

Speaking of which...

"Get spade" strikes me as a much better catch-phrase than "Time to take out the trash". Failing that, you could always try "Your name is Doug!" or one of the classics - "You hold him down, I'll hit him with the shovel!"....

Some curiosity about the species still, and some speculation. I can only assume that Arachspearians aren't very common, because neither Dan nor Abel seems to have ever seen one before (or at least, they never spoke before). So how did they get in the basement to begin with? Abel mentions spiders in the basement as early as #607... do they accumulate around magic creatures?

That could be a logical conclusion on the rats having pet spiders. If those spiders where messed around with some kind of magic my question is why? What purpose those spiders quoting Shakespear they have no other kind of offensive spells like ice, fire etc. But I like if they are bitten by those spiders you get those spells cool i like that. Anyway I like how Amber drew those big spiders kind of a reminder of that movie 8 legged freaks.

There's a species of crab native to Japan known (in English) as the Samurai Crab.  It is called this because it has the likeness of the face of a Samurai warrior on its shell (http://homepage2.nifty.com/oriku/heikegani.jpg).

Why does it have the likeness of a Samurai warrior on its shell?  Because crab fishermen were more likely to toss crabs back that had shells like that.  Those crabs were the ones that survived, and bred more Samurai crabs.

Which name? The number, or the comment under the comic, or the title of the page? On the front page, all three differ...

Perhaps we should include the strip number, rather than the date? Although, of course, since there are many folk who post the threads, it'd have to be a group decision...
Title: Re: 3/1/07- YEEEG!
Post by: Goatmon on March 04, 2007, 07:29:29 AM
As it is the only indicator here is the date, which is only present on the front page.  If someone happens to catch a comic once it's moved off of the front page (Which is extremely possible since Amber updates often) there's no indication of what day the comic was put up, hence it's not always blatantly obvious.

A simple "DMFA" or "Abel", and the date in the title isn't all that difficult, really.

I had thought that the date part was an Amber request, but I think I got it exactly wrong (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php?topic=1569.msg62552#msg62552).  Unless there are objections, I'll start putting strip numbers in it--I actually prefer that idea.

P.S. Every once in a while, the back button on the DMFA front page takes you back two pages.  I'm not sure if it's because the latest strip hasn't been added to the index, or if it's a problem with the script, but since the strip number is not immediately visible on the front page, people might hit the back button and add one, winding up repeating the strip number from the last update.
Title: Re: 3/1/07- YEEEG!

Numbers are fine, I just like knowing which ****ing comic the thread's about.  A date doesn't tell me that, and it's annoying to have to back and forth on the page checking for the date.  Which, I might add, is impossible if the thread has been bumped as late as a  ouple of days at which point the next comic will have changed and it  becomes will be impossible to tell from the archive which page was added.

Titling a thread "DMFA, February 24th" tells me it was a DMFA comic from a few weeks ago, at which point all I have to do is compare commentary to the comics that took place 6-8 strips ago.  Meh, whatever.  I probably sound like a grumpy old man.

I understand, or at least guess, that the code isn't really script as such, so the reason it jumps back two is that Amber forgot to update that one little segment.

Since there's four or five different places she needs to update, this isn't a big deal, and isn't something we're really jumping up and down over. OTOH, I have some sneaky plans with Darkmoon that may help resolve this... If we can get in without her noticing, etc etc... :-)

Uh...  Amber, if you're reading this, disregard all the above posts. No, really. There's nothing important in them at all...

Which name? The number, or the comment under the comic, or the title of the page? On the front page, all three differ...

Perhaps we should include the strip number, rather than the date? Although, of course, since there are many folk who post the threads, it'd have to be a group decision...

How about having the "Official" thread for a give thread be posted by Amber herself? I read other Web comics, and that is what they do on them. They also give a little wright up about the page itself..

*shrugs*

Just an Idea

That requires more work on Amber's part. The idea is, we harness the efforts of some of the rest of us lazy folks, and give her a break.

After all, if she's spending ~7 hours/day drawing the comic, minimum, isn't it only fair that she gets some time off?

On the El Goonish Shive forum, it's become a custom to provide a link to the strip in the first post of the thread.

Just a suggestion...

The problem with that is that it's not immediately obvious what the link needs to be - you have to go back one day, and then forwards one day...

Having a "here's the permanent link for this strip" is something else we could add to the page, I guess...

Right-clicking the comic image and choosing Properties shows me what the strip number is, no matter where it is.

My point was, whilst you can do that, and I can do that, and we can extrapolate from there...

... it's a bit on the nose to ask everyone to do so, every time, no? After all, it's not always the same...

we could do that when starting these threads so the numbers are there when we right click the strip. Cool I will keep that in my brain.

We do not need to open a thread that has not been posted in since the fifth of March to ask a poorly phrased question.

If you had come up with a paragraph or two of insightful comments, I might have let it slide, but you are being bapped.

Pay attention to red letters on the screen, and don't do it again.  This is your final warning before a ban.  I would suggest reading the RULES (http://www.clockworkmansion.com/main.php?page=rules)
