I know what you're gonna say. "But Zina! It's not even Halloween yet!" I know, but a few people have been hounding me about this, so I figured I'd start posting stuff for it. Never too early, right?
Some of you people remember last year I hosted a Secret Santa. I got over 40 people to join, and it was what I would call a 'success', so I figure I'd host another one this year. I know this all seems a little too early for something Christmas related, but I know how hectic the holidays can be, so might as well get started early, right? :3
This is how this works. This is a Secret Santa. If you don't know how this works, you basically pick a name out of a hat, and you get a present for whoever you picked. That person doesn't know you have them until the day they get their gift, and likewise you don't know who has you. This is just like that only art-related.
Comment, note or e-mail me saying you want to join and add a picture of the character you want drawn. If you want anything specific for your character to be doing, be sure to include it. On the 20th of November, I'll note you/e-mail you/IM you who you have, along with their reference pic, and you draw them. On Christmas, I'll post all the pics up. Fun, huh?
This is pretty much an idea to get you to draw for people you either don't know or wouldn't think to draw gift art for, and for you to recieve art from people you wouldn't expect.
The Rules-
Anyone can join, regardless of art skill. All I ask is that you put your effort into the piece.
Remember, this is about GIVING not recieving. Please join because you want to do art for others, not becuase you want art done for you.
Please, once you know who you're drawing for, make sure they don't find out. That'll ruin the surprise.
If you want your gift to be kept under a certain rating, please let me know.
If you participated last year and DID NOT do your SS gift pic, then you CANNOT join in this years round. I'm sorry, but that's just how it's gonna be this year. HOWEVER, if you get your pic from last year into me before the sign-up deadline(the 15th), then you can particpiate in this years Secret Santa.
Deadlines-
You have until the 15th of November to join, and the 25th of December to submit your gift. However, I understand that people get busy during this time, and if you can't make the deadline, no problem. Just be sure to let me know and give me a guess of when you'll think it'll be done.
I realize a lot of you are leaving DA/no longer posting art. This isn't limited to just DA, so as long as you can either find a host for your pic, or give it to me and I'll host it on my photobucket, it'll be fine.

Description: Jakob Pettersohn, grey/wolf-coloured lupine incubus. Age 901, clothing usually consists of casual dress, often with backpack. When doing film work he may sometimes be seen carrying an Arriflex 16mm camera or a portable tape recorder in a leather carry case (UHER 4000L or Nagra-IV - Like anyone's ever going to go into that level of detail)

Gender: Male
Age: 24
Height: five feet, eleven inches.
Build: toned, muscled and athletic, but not too much though.
Species: Wolf
Eyes: blue
Hair: Medium length black spiky hair; spiked out up and back, save for near the front where various bangs of hair of various length cascade down his forehead, styled in a slight middle parting (though they do not extend further than eye level). (think similar to Jin Kazama from the Tekken series.)
Fur Colouration: white with black-tipped ears and tail.
Distinguishing features: He has a visible x-shaped scar between his eyes.
Clothing: Deep blue sleeveless gi top and pants/trousers, sandals, and a black karate belt. He also wears red fingerless gloves, which begin just below his elbow on his forearm. At the end of his gloves (where it stops just before the elbow) and on his wrists are bands of metal which seemingly hold the gloves in place (basically a red version of Jyrras' gloves in his new outfit). He also wears a brown hooded cloak over the top of his clothes, and has a sheathed katana strapped to the side of his waist (at belt-level).

Lack of idea/inspiration can go many a ways.
One could freeze up looking at some of these fantastic pictures and all the details, or get the old 'no new idea syndrome'. A word description can leave you going ???A what??? some days. (Though I guess the time frame is there to go get over these)
Completing something like the following is helpfull to the drawer?
I like <insert some animals>, <ladies vs men>, <some hobby or activity>, <favourite/least favourite colours> ... ;) but feel free to go wild.
I'll have to think myself, as I'm really "feel free to go wild" as well ... and decide if I'm brave enough to display my lack of skill. Hate to be the giver of a lousy gift.

If I can get enough time free and look at enough pictures of similar characters/species to fully grasp the way the lines and shadows need to combine to create the anatomical detail correctly, I can occaisionally draw something presentable.

Bagi and Ryo, from Osamu Tezuka's 1984 cautionary film, "Bagi, The Monster of Mighty Nature". I focused on the reference pics I had for hours, then started drawing at 12 am while listening to the Cranberries 'Starz' collection... then spent the next week after I scanned the B&W picture coloring it with MS Paint... the only art program I know how to use. :B

The last, I throw in for use as a reference as to what I imagine my character's fur to look like; the specific pattern isn't important.
I had this really nice written description that I used in roleplaying, but it's lost (atleast, for now), though I may be able to get a copy.

I don't have a character, so no references or renditions exist. I like wolves, and dragons, so for a drawing ideas how about an anthro she-fox/she-wolf, or a dragon? (a non-anthro dragon is great)
I have no specific details that are needed, so feel free to 'go wild'. For drawers wanting more of a guide, i would likely pick quite ordinary/typical details in describing either option. So feel free to use your version of "typical" as a guide. (I can even google up some refs if the drawer feels really stuck, I know I've seen numerous dragon tutorials)
Hopefully this (complete lack of) detail fits the your request for details Zina.

So, I made up my nifty little sketchy several weeks ago and then quickly inked it. I decided I liked it and wanted to scan it in so I could computer colour it... sadly my scanner power cord went missing. So, I went all this time doing nothing. Then... I realized I had access to a photocopier, so that taken care of I came to the sad realization that I apparently have lost my coloured pencils. As for how I scanned this...? I remembered the school scanner in the library, which comes down to the point of the matter...

Sorry, yesterday was extremely hectic for me, and I wasn't able to have much computer time. Today will be the same, but I'll be able to get back on top of things in the evening. If I don't finish sending them out tonight, I'll try to finish before I leave sunday morning, or when I get home that evening. Either way, people will get their assignments before the 20th.
I'm going by the best form of contact I have, so yeah. People I know only from the forum are getting forum PMs, people on DA are getting DA notes, people that e-mailed me are getting e-mails, etc. I'm also trying to get the questions people have answered as soon as I can. Like I said, yesterday was busy, and I got very little done.
After today, I'll be on thanksgiving break, and will have very few excuses not to be on top of things, so don't worry. X3

yep... these days Xmas is more of an excuse to bring together family/friends than an actual christian celebration anyway, if wasn't, Santa woudn't have replaced jesus as main icon of xmas :U

Currently it looks like I'm going to be on time. It took a long while to get the sketch to look sensible (problems with figure poise and stuff) and since then I haven't had a chance to scan it so I can do the colouring, but I should be sorting that out tonight.
Just gotta ink, really. Doubt this year's will be colored, though. Just too much going on, with work and life in general. But it'll be there on time.
I'm hoping to be on time, but I'm not sure. If I'm late, it will definitely be done by the new year.

Mine is done and inked. It actually looks suprisingly non-hideous. :)
I just need to find a scanner I can use. I'm not going to to attempt to color it, because I simply don't have the talent for it. Not to mention, I'd have to use a computer because I don't have any art supplies, and I've found that coloring a scanned image with just the basic photoshop or painting programs (especially when one doesn't really know how to use them) is exceedingly tedious and only produces mediocre results. :B
Good to here some of you guys are on top of things. XD If it was me, I'd honestly wait until the last night. Even if I didn't mean to.
And I must say, the stuff I've recieved so far is awesome. I'm excited to show everyone the work people have done. And I can't wait to see everyone elses gifts. :3

Okay, so as I may have said (dunno) I cannot find my scanner powercord, which makes the scanner as good as dead and seeing as how I highly doubt I'll have this done for tomorrow (last day of school before break), barring on a Chanuka miracle, and don't see this happening, on time at least.
Clearly I'm going to have to break into someone's house on Christmas Eve while they're out partying to highjack the use of their scanner.

Sorry, Sienna. Things do slip by me sometimes. I fixed the journal so it says you'll be late. Also, DJpirtu had sent me a picture via e-mail, but I must have missed it, so Gabi, you're gift pic is there.
So...yeah. On one hand, I'm really happy with the results, and glad to hear so many people like their gift and had a good time. On the OTHER hand, I'm really frustrated with some of the negative things I'm hearing. Apparently some people missed the whole "It's about giving, not receiving" thing. Oh well, I guess there's always going to be a few jerks in everything. =|
So, for future reference, guys, the whole point of this was for YOU to draw a picture for SOMEONE ELSE, and that the only requirement is that you do your best. And I'd like to think everyone here DID do their best.
Try to keep that in mind. Because, honestly, if I get one more person coming to me and complaining about how they "don't like their free gift waaaaaah" I'm just going to lose it.

I may post a revised version of the Gareeku picture, but I think I need some help from a decent colourist to get it right. I have managed to do a reasonable job of shading the fur but I just cannot get the cloth shading on the dobok to work, and it ends up looking worse than the flat-coloured version.

I was just in town because my brother had to work today (apparently it turns out it was really tomorrow...) and my mother had to do book-keeping. The latter of which involved cleaning the computer-room, and we found the scanner power-cord :boogie However... all of my art still happens to be at my grandmothers... so that's a no-go for now, but fear not Taski, for your gift is own the way! (yeah... you better be scared >:3)
Anyways, in the New Year, expect it.
I have sketched, and inked, and am now kicking photoshop repeatedly. I'll start coloring once I get Darkmoon to fix my stupidity. (He usually sets stuff up for me. He is well trained)
