Title: 02/06/09 [Abel 2 #43] - The Tour
Post by: Jairus on February 05, 2009, 11:29:49 PM
Heheh, looks like Abel's attracted the eye of a young Sucubus. Who loves her sammich. And has suction cups. Hm. Interesting. An Octocubi. Or maybe an Octobus. Should I stop with the puns?

So... is it Fa'Lina giving him the tour? And that... raccoon?... in the second panel isn't being very nice, playing keepaway with that Warp-Aci and the cookie.

At first I thought that was a girl... Then I noticed the flat and bare chest in the last panel... And is he waving at Abel or Fa'Lina (Or whoever the tour guide is) or someone we can't see... I can't tell..

I think he's just playing with his glow rat. If the warp-Aci really wants the cookie, he could just port over and grab it, right?

One of those Cubi looks a lot like Dan.  The one with magenta wings, freaking out.  Maybe another Cyra clan Cubi?  Regardless, cool.   :goamber

I'm pretty sure that our sandwich eating, waving friend is male. Note the lack of breasts. Cute expressions though.
Oh, and there's the elephant cubi from the previous page.

I noticed that too.  But this would be over 350 years before Dan was born, so...

The guide doesn't appear to be Fa'Lina though.  The wings are white with black tips and the clothing is a light blue.  Not that Fa'Lina couldn't shapeshit to match that, but why would she?

Note just to the left of the freaking out cubus that there's a canid head just leaning in from offpanel with a very sly look on its face. Oh dearie me.

And that octocubus or whatever it is is farging adorable. Can I keep him? :<

That 'Cubi is heading in the opposite direction that Abel is facing and the speech bubbles are pointing to, so I would assume it is just some random passerby.

Also, the succubus with the book has returned as well!

I'm pretty sure it's Fa'Lina giving the tour. In Abel's recent/current state, she probably intends to be personally in charge of him for a while. Since she's out of view in each panel, and given the apparent eye contact, I say his wave is for Abel. Maybe he has a thing for spots, or maybe he's just on the lookout for new students to befriend.

It could just be that Amber decided to subvert the Non-Mammal Mammaries (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NonMammalMammaries) trope, but I suppose it would be best for Amber to clear this up at some future point.

Anyway, the main 'Cubi is puzzling me too, though he/she certainly seems to have something of an impulse control problem  :P

If Amber's anything like me, she probably was tilting her head so that way she could draw at different angles. I have a tendency to do that, so my neck can hurt while I'm drawing too.

Lovely comic, either way. :3 I like the enormous group of Cubi and the effeminate lovesick fellow waving at Abel.

Hm, so cubi tend to stay with their own groups in the lunch rooms. Does this mean what feelings they eat, or do they have similar groups like we all did in high school?

It's fun to see all the differences and similarities to actual school they have there.  :P

friendly sort might not explaine all the little floating hearts though...

I wonder if cubi can actualy see emotions like that.

If they ran into an angery person would they sort of see the hazy anger lines raidiating off them,  and if some one was in love would they spot little out of focus hearts circling there head?

Oh, and to the people saying "Octubus", impossible. An octopus style creature would (probably) be a mer, and mer can't have children with cubi (Source http://missmab.com/Demo/HG05.php (http://missmab.com/Demo/HG05.php)), so he might be using a spell to shapeshift, or he's a mythos... I don't know anything about mythos', so I toss that out. (I hope he's shapeshifting)

And if you haven't figured it out yet, I say this because of the suction cup like things on him.

But Mer don't resemble octopi, they look like that spiny thing. It's most likely a Mythos Cubi. Like, a Kraken Cubi or something.

To be very frank, it's probably a Mythos. But then again, anything that does not immediately resemble a certain race falls straight into the "Mythos" category for me since it makes the world a whole lot easier. :B

'Kay, this thread is totally bonkers... and I love it.

I'm fairly sure our new friend is male, perhaps he recognizes Abel from somewhere, or mayhaps he mis-recognizes him as someone else very similar looking, though that seems unlikely given Abel's rather unique appearance, but then... doesn't everyone in Amber's comic have a generally unique appearance?

I'm having difficulty determining whether those things on our new friend's head are horns or wings, though given where we are in the story's setting I'll have to be satisfied with calling them hornwings, *shrugs* perhaps my eyes are going.

I accidentally went into the "lusty siren tavern" section instead of here and clicked on "10/30/08 [CVRPG #884] - Uncomfortably gay..." thread and it took me a while to figure out that it wasn't about this Abel strip.

Is Mink gonna turn out to be like Varsuuvius where you keep not telling us what the hell it is? Seriously, I'm really confused here.

Of course, it's species could be hermaphroditic...

Considering the character with magenta wings is a beaver, I would say the answer is you guys are being dinks for being incapable of thinking that in a universe filled with MILLIONS of individuals, that two of them may one day have a similar fur colour without them necessarily being linked.

actually, i don't see it, truth be told, about the only vague similarity would possibly be the hairdo, but even so, all that would mean is that Dan has a hairdo a few hundred years out of date, like a Hawaiian shirt  >:3

I find its a problem when you deal with a comic where you have just enough diversity in races in colour that there aren't a lot of similarities between the cast...but not enough environmental scenes to show diversity outside the main cast.  It tends to lead people to think that the whole universe revolves around the main cast and so every similarity must be a connection.

Honestly, I would have been a bit more loose with the colours in the new strip, except that Beings with Creature-like colouring would likely run the risk of going the same way as Dorcan in that particular town.  James gets a free pass for some reason, I'll stick my fingers in my ears and not go there.

I don't know guys, I think maybe Mink is just a friendly fellow. He just loves seeing and meeting new people like Abel.

Also, an Octopus-mythos Incubus just lends itself to WAY too many puns. xD

That's a lot of tentacles.  It's starting to feel like an H-Dojin shop in here.

It could just be that Amber decided to subvert the Non-Mammal Mammaries (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NonMammalMammaries) trope, but I suppose it would be best for Amber to clear this up at some future point.
I just had to say this. If you take into account several non-mammal characters that have fallen to this trope already (Alykia, Shanna, Hennya, Matilda, et-frickin'-cetera) I HIGHLY doubt this is our one rare subversion.

Also, I also feel the need to say this.... The guide says "most cubi keep to a particular lounge" and we have Abel (*cough*) and another supposed male who could pass as a female (*cough*) looking at him in a way that most dudes would feel uncomfortable having faced in their general direction. (*cough*)

Do I really need to say it?

To be blunt, I really don't care about Mink's gender. That is to say, I don't currently care. But until either Amber or the comic clarifies whether Mink is a he or a she, I'm going to call Mink "it."

Long answer short: after watching Tieria Erde (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/82/Gundam_00_-_Tieria_Erde.jpg) and his (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tieria_Erde) siblings at work in Gundam 00, I am wary of identifying by gender any borderline case like Mink's.

Just to clarify, I mean the concept of Marluxia. Marluxia was female in the original concept for Chain of Memories. The character himself didn't have a sex change or anything like that. Just wanted to make that clear.

Besides which, purple and yellow shouldn't go together: mix those two colors, you get brown. They don't complement each other, they just clash. Red and purple or blue and purple would do nicely, as would green and yellow or orange and yellow. And for that matter, red and green clash too, but I'll let it slide because of Christmas. All I'm saying is that you don't need colors to clash to get colorful.

What? You learn a few things when your mom does costume designs for plays.

I disagree about yellow and purple not going together--I've seen that in basketball jerseys and it looked fine to me.

Those are sports, they're allowed to look stupid. Besides, in my mind this is just a rule of thumb. You can subvert it, if you can pull it off. And Simeon... couldn't.

You phail, Simeon! :O

But I agree. Purple should either go with something dark, or with more purple. Thankfully, in his finished version the only colours that seem to clash are on his wings.

Besides which, purple and yellow shouldn't go together: mix those two colors, you get brown. They don't complement each other, they just clash. Red and purple or blue and purple would do nicely, as would green and yellow or orange and yellow.

Waah? Purple and gold (which is basically a kind of yellow) are the traditional colours of royalty. Roman emperors spent centuries perfecting that look. :3

Heck... my avatar is all black, purple, and gold. Just like this mow: :mowninja Don't the colours complement each other nicely?

However, I will concede that the colours Tapewolf picked do not go together. :mowtongue

That wasn't supposed to be yellow, it was supposed to be brass, but I didn't have the usual colour I use for that to hand.  We went with silver armour in the end anyway.

In an attempt to get closer to the topic, I have a question. Are there any dhampyr (half vampire) in the DMFA-verse at Dan's time? On that note, is a cubi-dhampyr possible? (Considering the "it's a cubi or not" rule)

Though, to be fair, you could probably find Simeon's colors in nature.
Or Dan's.

At the risk of dragging this out, there was actually an earlier attempt:
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k216/tapewolf/projectfuture/Simeon1a.png

With the possible exception of some (most? all?) fluorescent colors, most colors can be found somewhere in nature, even when keeping to the animal kingdom (leaving out plants and minerals). Though there's some that I've never yet seen on skin or fur, only feathers and/or scales, whether by pigment or iridescence (blues, greens and maybe purples).

You're too impatient, you need to work on that. But look at it this way if their extinction happened 60 years prior to Dan being born then there were vampires at the time Abel was still 20, well logic would dictate such anyway. And to your dhampyr question, it's possible but not exactly likely seeing as how vampires burst into flames when hit by sunlight.

Er... Either you're a Cubi, or you're not.

So... either you're a Cubi vampire... or you're not. I'd suggest not, since Amber seems more inclined to play with other games.

As for Dan's time? No. No vampires left in Dan's time, at all. Abel's time? I'd say not. Either you're a vampire, or you're not, I'd say.

I'd say there are two main options:
1. Vampires are unable to reproduce by normal means, like Undead, in which case the answer is no
2. If you can have a child with a vampire, the vampire traits would end as soon as the kid hit 'Cuberty.

the first negates the Last, and a Cubi would have the stronger genetic structure at work, which would effectively override the weaker 'genetics' of a vampire. Vampires, to be blunt are parasites, Dhampir, truth be told are seriously just /lame/, i don't really care for the folklore at work, these days it screams one thing, and one thing only: Mary Sue.

y'know, most folks would have the sense to drop this subject right now, in the face of evidence that they don't exist, and yet you're almost hoping that it would not be the case.

Amber said vampires weren't on furrae in the comic itself (actually fluffy did), and truth be told, that should be the end of that.

Just let it go, man, just... let it go. Vampires stopped being cool a long time ago.

I think Abel has to somewhat recover from the shock of the last couple days and develop the beginnings of attitude before he can drive anyone insane. This (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Ab_033.php) and this (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_425.php) are different Abels... or vastly different stages of his personality's (and reputation's?) development over 300+ years.

It was mentioned  that some of the tests on Abel would have to be delayed until he was a little more stable (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Ab_021.php).  However, I suppose the main reason for not mentioning Dan's tour would be that Abel's tour was a few hundred years earlier.  Is that what you were referring to?

Uh...  No.

I was instead referring to the possibility that Mink has an affinity for the emotion of love. If that is true, his excitement over seeing Abel for the first time would not be anything unusual.  It would just be his nature to be friendly and excited about meeting someone new.

I did not mention #527 because it did not talk about emotional affinities.
