Title: 12/29/08 [DMFA #959] - Free spirit
Post by: Caswin on December 28, 2008, 10:53:02 PM
It's a weird thing.  In theory, at least some vacation slideshows should hit that balance of subject matter, photos and delivery that would take them past "bearable" and into "inarguably worthwhile"... but it never seems to pan out that way, does it?

the real question is: is Dan with Regina, Lore...or Nutmeg?

Curse you ambiguous hand of fate...curse you so hard.

Alexsi looks really good in the first panel.  I like the expression on her face.

For some reason, I just happen to find Jyrras to be quite cute in that second panel.

...Which also made me think that we might need an "I'm gay for Jyrras" image now. :B

(Edit for a/an error. :<)

He is cute. He seems to be enjoying Abel's cooking.

Poor Dan. Stuck watching a family slideshow. You'd think a family of demons would have something interesting to look at.

Ah yes here is the time my brother and I took on that angry mob outside of H-Ann. He did say he liked the rocky terrain out there. 'Good place for a base of operations.' I told him it was too cliched. But did he listen noooo....."

Jyrras does look cute there. Although no one else seems to have a fork.
Eh, it's cake, you can eat it anyway you like. Just don't throw it away. Mold means nothing!

I hope slides are a recent invention in Furrae.  Otherwise he may have centuries of the things to get through.

Also, Dan's wanderlust bodes ill for when he finally caves in and agrees to a full-time course at SAIA,

Fi has the unamused look of a cat that has had it up to here and is now ready to claw something's throat out. Dan looks to be somewhere between "Why am I here?" and "You people are insane."

I also get the impression that Fi is the amoral, hyperactive younger sibling Dan never had.

Kria is once again proving just how evil she truly is.  :mwaha   I love that Dan and Fi have identical "oh dear GOD when is this going to ever end" expressions. Kria can truly deliver a slideshow from hell.

A fundamental element of the horror that is a slideshow is that very few people know how to frame and capture moments that are both interesting and representative of the experience of being there. (Or, maybe they actually *succeeded* in capturing the full essence of the experience -- which was horribly generic and deathly dull.)

It'll probably be a long time before that sideshow ends. Cause somehow it seems Kria wouldn't have a long enough attention span to focus on taking pictures well in the sense that she just snaps it and moves on, and I wouldn't be surprised if half of those were of random things like ice cream trucks or something hat would be equally weird at a beach party, evil or not. Ad Dans look seems somewhere in between mortified and bored to suicide. And besides, only family members really care about pictures like that. And even then it's only the people that were there.

Oh gods. I can totally feel Dan's pain. Slides, photos, videos - all that stuff is totally unbearable even if you are not much of a "free spirit". :<

Oh, and Jyrras is adorable. :> Somehow he manages to look younger then usual in that second panel.

I really like how Alexsi is "spread" out over the two panels. It gives the impression of a wider lens to look at the scene through.

But how she's talking...... It's kind of odd. That she doesn't use contractions is striking of a formality that I didn't think was in her character. And I would have thought she'd mention Dan's massive incompetance and tendancies towards mayhem. Apparantly he's set Lost Lake on fire more than once, anda the dancing on the roof in his shorts probably didn't attract customers. He has a lot worse qualities as an employee than simply being a "free sprit"

In conclusion...... Why can't Jyrras build a robot to look menacing, guard the place, and clean the dishes. Shoudln't be too hard if you can build a giant mech and "farming implements."

It's an Amber thing.  She doesn't use contractions much, either.

She's got some other linguistic quirks, but I fear the smackdown if I start talking about her choice of language.

All I was trying to say was that this stilted, formal tone as unusual for the character. Of course, most of her speaking lines are her shouting in a rage at someone who broke something important, so maybe this is how she talks when she's calm. Or maybe she's uncomfortable around Abel, or at least not sure where he stands?

We have it from Fa'Lina (in the 'Cubi abilities section) that short attention spans are frequent among 'Cubi. I get the feeling that this wanderlust is quite normal, and probably one of the reasons an average course length there is about 400 years. People are expected to get up and wander out much of the time.

Slide shows are the worst way to record memories.  Video cameras are second best but full on mass flashbacks are hands down the best.
Slide shows are evil, evil, EVIL in its purest form.  With a sideshow there is no excitement, no fun, just posing and snapshots.  Mad thinks Dan should get up for drinks with the help of Fi and teleport out of there, a nice yarn ball pit with catnip should bring him right up.

Since the evil beach party was apparently an annual event and Kria is a few hundred years old.  (A gentlemen never discusses the actual age of a woman.  In Kria's case, this would also be self preservation.)  That would be quite a few slides.  Not to mention all the baby pictures of Lorenda.  It will be interesting to see if we also see Lorenda's face.

She may only have been able to photograph them for the last 90 years or so.  You may be right about the Lorenda pics, though I suspect she (Lorenda) will throw a big enough hissy-fit when those come out to make Kria reconsider.
