I can see why this is the embarassing part of the story.  Dan gets mistaken for a girl lots of times but this is the first time so the first time is always the charm.

I think the Amazons gave Dan more respect because he was nice with them and let one of them have his sword (I would have carried two long swords, two short swords and many throwing daggers but that's just me).  The gift of a good weapon to a warrior clan can be a good thing.


Though something just came to mind.
Does Dan have any illigitimate children?  Many hero's who are friends to 'wenches' are implied to have a few illigitimate children.

Drifting totally off-topic, I don't know whether anyone remembers the band Placebo?  The lead singer was kind of ambiguous as well.  My brother once told me that when they were on tour, people would sometimes watch to see which toilet he'd go in.  Apparently if he saw anyone doing it, he'd sometimes toss a coin before going in the gents.
